Directions: You are tasked to write a 3-page double-spaced essay about ONE (1) of the optional primary sources that I have assigned to you this semester. Your source can be any source that you want from Laulima. If you want to write your essay about an outside primary source, you may with my permission (please email it to me first for approval).
Your essay shouldn’t only be a summary of the source. You should engage with the text and show a mastery of its meaning, background, and implications. You can analyze your selected source in a variety of ways, but here are some questions to guide your writing….
Who wrote this source? When was it written? Why was it written? Where was it produced? What is this source saying/what type of source is it? How was this source first produced & transmitted? What was the original audience for this source? What was the historical context + background for this source to be produced? What information can we learn from this source? Why does this source provide an insightful look into history? How could you use this source for academic research? What was this source’s intended meaning and audience? Is this a written or an oral source? Etc.
Your paper must have a title page, a bibliography/works cited of your primary source and you should also include citations throughout the paper ( footnotes). History papers are written in the Chicago-Turban Style of format. I will accept an optional rough draft essay to “grade” and give feedback on before the final due date. I highly recommend you do this, but again, it is entirely optional. ROUGH DRAFT PAPERS MUST BE PRINTED AND TURNED IN AS A PHYSICAL COPY AT LEAST ONE WEEK BEFORE THE ASSIGNMENT IS DUE!
The assignment is worth 25 points, or 10% of your overall final grade. There is no extra credit associated with this assignment. This essay is due on 12/14/24. Please see the affixed rubric down below for further directions
