5.4. Position Paper:
Present an argument or stance on a particular issue. A
position paper aims to persuade
towards the validity of your viewpoint by presenting a well-reasoned argument
supported by evidence. There are different ways to structure a position
paper. Generally, you can have an introduction (to introduce the topic or issue at hand briefly)
and a thesis statement
(to state your position on the issue clearly. This statement should guide the
entire paper, so it should be specific and arguable). You can provide some background information to
help the reader understand the issue and, where needed, define any key terms or concepts necessary
for understanding your argument. Then, you can proceed to your arguments (main
body of the paper), where you can present several arguments or points that support your position.
Each point should be clearly stated and followed by evidence, such as a decision, statutory provision, data, examples, or expert
opinion. Use
credible/scholarly sources to back up each supporting point. Acknowledge
opposing viewpoints or counterarguments
that exist (this shows that you have considered multiple perspectives).
Then, refute these counter
arguments by explaining why they are less convincing or flawed than your
position. Then, you can conclude
(feel free to restate the thesis; summarize your position and the key arguments
that support it). And then, depending on the context, you might conclude with a
call to action, a
recommendation for future action, or a suggestion for further research
(these are optional). Provide your references. Note that the above is not a standard format. Feel
free to be creative and present the position paper in your own way.

you to demonstrate your ability to formulate a reasoned argument, engage with
critical theories from the course, and propose legal solutions or
interpretations related to AI and its implications for the law.
Your essay should allow you to explore critical approaches,

Your paper can be short (between 1,500 minimum
and 2,000 words
maximum), excluding footnotes and bibliography. Kindly use the most recent
Canadian Guide to Uniform Legal Citation (McGill Guide) for your citation and
formatting. Ensure your paper is well-organized, with clear headings and
subheadings to guide the reader.

Additional tips: Make sure your arguments are
clear and concise. Avoid unnecessary jargon or overly complex sentences. Even
though you are presenting a position, strive to maintain an objective tone.
Base your arguments on facts and logical reasoning rather than emotion or sensationalism.
Ensure that your arguments flow logically from one to the next and that the overall
structure of the paper is coherent. A well-crafted position paper demonstrates
your deep understanding of the issue and your ability to argue convincingly for
your position.
