Overview
Your research design is your strategy for carrying out a research project that will answer your research question.
One common error researchers may make in approaching a research project is to decide on a particular research method or technique prior to or independent of their research question. This can result in a poor fit between the proposed research project and the proposed research question. Proposals exhibiting a poor fit between the proposed research question and project will not be deemed viable and will not make it past the Proposal Defense stage. Careful attention to research design is necessary to ensure that the research project you propose is tailored to identify, gather, analyze, and interpret the data necessary to answer the research question you have set for yourself.
This will require you to define and provide a rationale for your research design. Your rationale must be supported by and derived from existing, topic-specific, peer-reviewed literature. You should pay special attention to the sources that were assigned to you in your research design course to ensure your research design is rooted in seminal methodological texts and consistent with the norms of research in the subfield. Your rationale should address questions including but not limited to, what is the purpose of the design? When is it used? Why is it the most appropriate choice for the present study? What advantages might be gained by using an alternative design? Potential weaknesses in the design should be thoroughly identified and addressed. The chosen research design(s) should be consistent with the research question.
If this assignment is skillfully done it should help you make substantial progress toward the completion of Chapter 3 of your manuscript.
