CASE FOR ASSIGNMENT
Tina supervises a staff of about 25 social workers and support staff in a large social work institution. One staff member, Barbara (who has been with the institution longer than Tina) sometimes flatly
refuses to obey Tina in taking up new assignments and will tell her so in front of other staff members during meetings. Tina never confronts Barbara but will upbraid other staff members in staff meetings. Barbara disagrees with the direction of the institution and will express her negative opinions
about the leadership if given an opportunity. Barbara is good at her work and is diligent at
completing tasks. Tina will talk to other staff members about Barbara’s behaviour, but does not
confront Barbara directly. Instead, she spreads the work among other more agreeable staff. As a
result, Barbara has not been involved in the latest major initiative which significantly increased an
already high staff workload. Other staff members think this is wrong and morale is low among staff.
