Research paper 1: Analysis of a chosen inquiry in ‘development-security nexus’ literature
You have already written a proposal explaining your chosen topic (a specific debate or inquiry or claim or argument or problematic that is present in the ‘development-security nexus’ literature).
For paper 1, you will examine the chosen topic by drawing supportive claims and examples from scholarly sources. You will also need to highlight the significance of your chosen topic for approaching and exposing the problematics of uneven development.
Approximate length of the paper: 3,000 words (excluding charts, tables and bibliography)
Your paper MUST have the following sections:
1) Introduction
- Max. 150 words
- Introduce your topic & say why you have chosen this topic.
- Mention what is the main argument of your paper. Please say clearly, “In this paper, I argue that ….. ”
2) Analysis
- Please organize this section by providing sub-headings. Sub-headings play a key role in highlighting the main ideas of your analysis.
- By reviewing relevant literature related to your topic, you will present a well-developed analysis. Must be properly cited using APA.
- Please adopt an analytical writing, instead of descriptive writing. Write in a simple and direct manner.
- Writing in first person is recommended. For example: “I identify …”, “In my view, …..”
- Make connections with course themes and concepts.
- When you use multiple sources for your analysis, you need to put your sources in conversation with each other. Do not summarize articles one by one.
3) Conclusion
- Max. 100 words
- A conclusion that rephrases the main argument in the light of the analysis you presented.
4) References
- Provide a list of references of all your sources in APA format.
Sources must be used as follows:
- Please make use of the 2 articles you listed in the annotated bibliography of your research outline.
- You must use minimum 3 readings from the course syllabus. This will help you to draw connections to course themes.
- Any number of external scholarly (peer-reviewed) sources that you will find through library research.
- In addition to scholarly sources, you are also allowed to use selected non-academic sources (online articles, blogs, non-academic books, magazines, etc.) if that helps you in any significant ways. But please be selective. Use your judgement in choosing trusted non-academic sources.
Formatting Instructions
- You must upload your paper as Word or PDF file. Any other file type will not be accepted.
- You need to have a title for your research project. NO title page required.
- Name, student number, course code & instructor’s name in assignment header.
- Double-spaced
- 12 pt, Times New Roman
- Provide page numbers.
- Headings/sub-headings must be provided.
Referencing Instructions
- Use APA format for in-text citations and bibliography.
- Any outside information (course readings, supporting evidence, illustrations that are not your own etc.) MUST be cited properly.
- Note that plagiarism (passing off somebody else’s ideas as your own) is a serious offense.
Late penalty
A late penalty of 2% per day (including weekend days) will be deducted from the grade for late submission. Late assignments will not be accepted more than 5 days after the due date.
