Directions: Based on your growing knowledge of the science of reading and its implications for classroom instruction, this assignment requires you to select an evidence-based intervention, technique, or practice that is literacy based that you are interested in learning more about.
Research Project for Graduate Students–Additional Course Assignment (50 points)
Step 1: Use the link provided, spend some time exploring the topics addressed on the What Works Clearinghouse Website: WWC-Literacy Research
Step 2: Choose 5 studies for each of the following: (a) Tier I-Strong; (b) Tier II-Moderate; and (c) Tier III-Promising. It is up to you how many you choose from each category as long as all categories are represented at least once.
Step 3: Create a chart, table, or graphic to report your findings based on the time you have spent reviewing each of your study choices. Please see the sample table below. Feel free to recreate this table or create your own table to display your findings. Whatever format you choose to report your findings, make sure that all of the components included in the sample table below are included in your submission.
NOTE: I expect you to read all information provided for the topics you choose. If there are videos then you need to watch them. If there are related resources, then you need to spend time reading and reflecting on these too.
Step 4: Finalize your chart of findings and submit to canvas no later than Tuesday, April 2nd.
GRADING CRITERIA: You will receive 10 points for each study–dependent upon your addressing each component in the sample table. Receiving the full 10 points for each study will also be based on your level of craftsmanship. This is the level of care and time you invest learning about each study. Feel free to add any information to your chart that you feel is necessary for understanding the totality of the research.
NOTE: I have redesigned this assignment from what was originally included in the syllabus. If you have already started working on this assignment using the information presented in the syllabus, please do not fret because you will not be penalized for submitting a five-page paper in APA format.
My reasoning for changing this assignment was based on the belief that a better use of your time would be spent perusing the wealth of evidence-based research compiled through the What Works Clearinghouse. I also felt that a chart/table/graphic organizer would be a more efficient way for you to report your findings. The goal of this assignment is more about what you learn and introducing you to a substantial resource for your future use within a school setting. Rather than about details related to writing a paper in APA format. Please let me know if you have any questions and/or concerns.
