Students will create and deliver a 20-minute presentation. The presentation will take the form of an initial study based on a research question or problem for a larger study. The larger study may turn out to be your project or dissertation that you complete over the summer. The 20 minute presentation will comprise of the following elements:
• A statement of the research question or problem and the context in which it has arisen.
• A brief survey of the existing academic work on this topic and its relevance and importance to your research question.
• The rationale for and description of your proposed methodology for the preliminary work or pilot study.
• A description of the preliminary work or pilot study that you have undertaken and an analysis of the way it sheds light on your proposed larger study.
• An overview of the proposed methodology for the larger study.
• Your assessment of the actual results of the preliminary study and the implications they suggest
for the larger study.
• What do you see as the potential impact of this research in the wider world?
• Bibliography slide also submitted in advance as an annotated bibliography.
Assessment Criteria
Your mark for this assignment will be assessed on the following:
• The clarity and rigour of the research question and its relevance to the context in which the
study is situated.
• An understanding of the relevant literature (and other media) which are relevant to an
understanding of the question / problem.
• The soundness and appropriateness of the methodologies used for both the preliminary study
and the proposed larger study.
• The rigour of the preliminary study.
• How convincing was the argument in relation to the results and the impact?
