Two discussion posts:
Topic 4.1 – Language, Gender, and Conversation
Please answer the 4 questions below in a detailed manner.
1. The English language evolves. Some scholars think we are in the middle of a new evolution, where text and instant messaging lingo and spelling will be widely accepted and the rules we learned in school will fade away. What do you think? Explain your response in a paragraph or two.
2. What status and connection differences among males and females does Dr. Deborah Tannen reveal her video “Gender-Specific Language Rituals” featured in the Week 4 Learning Resources? Have you observed these rituals in children and/or adults? What about your own communication? Explain your answer.
3. Provide a detailed summary of Dr. Tannen’s video entitled “That’s Not What I Meant! Signals, Devices, and Rituals” found in the Week 4 Learning Resources. In your summary be sure to address the following questions: What conversational signals, devices and rituals does Tannen address? What are the influences on conversational style (include the big five)?
4. Explain the difference between rapport and report talk as revealed in the discussion entitled “Men and Women Talking Together” from the Week 4 Learning Resources. The discussion between Dr. Deborah Tannen and Dr. Robert Bly is a little dated, but the differences are still widely acknowledged today.

Topic 4.2 – Principles of Nonverbal Communication and Personal Presentation
After reading the chapter entitled “Principles of Nonverbal Communication” from the Week 4 Learning Resources, answer the following questions:
1. Explain 2 of the 4 principles of nonverbal communication revealed in the chapter. Be sure to select the 2 principles that you believe are the most compelling and share the reasons for your selection in your response. Provide a paragraph for each and be sure to give examples of the principles from your life experiences, experiences of friends or relatives, or experiences you have seen in the media.
2. Our personal presentation, style of dress, and surroundings such as a bedroom, apartment/home, car, or office send nonverbal messages about our identities. Analyze some of the nonverbal signals that your personal presentation or environment send. What do they say about who you are? Do they create the impression that you desire?
