Please
read the attached Word doc entitled “Why Zoom is Terrible” by
Kate Murphy.  It was published in The New York Times on April 29, 2022.

Learning Outcome

Organize, develop, and revise a thesis-driven essay that includes
substantial support from the text.

Context of the Assignment

Since the beginning
of the semester, we discussed the following topics: (1) the purpose of writing
(2) active reading, (3) effective note-taking, (4) understanding your
assignment and (4) creating an essay outline, all of which we covered in
Modules 1, 2 and 3.  You are being asked
to write a response paper about “Why Zoom is Terrible” written by Kate Murphy.
Read the three questions in the list below
carefully, and then select only ONE.

Instructions

Write a thesis-centered essay of 750 words (about three to four
typewritten pages) in response to one
question that you select from the list below.

Take a position on the essay topic, and clearly state your position in
your first paragraph.  This need not be
your actual personal view—-you may argue from the opposite point of view.

Create a typed outline (from Module 2), on a single sheet and attach
this to the end of your essay.

Analyze your examples to show their relevance to your argument. Use
your own observations, experiences, or other sources to develop your claims.

Be sure your essay addresses all parts of the question.

As you develop your essay, make sure that you refer to the reading by providing
sufficient support and explanation by integrating at least three
examples from Murphy’s article.

When you cite directly from the reading, use proper MLA page citation* (visit
www.purdueowl.edu for more guidance.)

Prepare your essays using Times New Roman, 12-point size font, double
space, no bold.

Submit your essay as a Word document via Brightspace/Turnitin in the
“Assignments and Submissions” section by Tuesday October 1, 2024, before 11:00 PM.

Assessment

This
essay is worth 20% of your course grade and will be evaluated using the rubric
for reflective essays in the Course Information section on Brightspace. I’ve
also attached a copy of this rubric below this topic sheet in the ‘Assignments
and Submissions’ section

Make sure to revise, spell check, and proofread your final paper before
submitting.

Note
that the topics on the list are very specific and focused–make sure that you
stick to the topic as described and not venture into more generalized and
broader subjects.

1.
How does Murphy make a distinction between Zoom video chats and
telephone calls?  Which of these channels
of communication does she argue to be more effective at interpersonal
communication?

2.
Although
Zoom video chats and other similar apps had to be learned and used during the
global pandemic lockdown, what sort of compromises or adjustments did users
have to make in order to stay connected to others, in work, school and personal
situations?  Using examples from your own
life and experiences, discuss your views on these compromises

3.
What
does Murphy conclude about face-to-face contact when communicating in person
with someone else?  To what extent do
Zoom video chats strengthen face-to-face contact between people?

* In MLA citations, you must refer to the author by her last name
“Murphy” only, and the page number on the reading where you are
getting the material from.  Put the last
name in parentheses e.g. (Murphy 1) or (Murphy 3).  Visit www.purdueowl.edu for more guidance.
