Proposal Title:
Rethinking Single-Family Homes: A Balanced Approach to Housing Investment and Wealth Building in the United States
QUESTION: Should the United States Continue to Prioritize Single-Family Homes as the Primary Form of Housing Investment and Wealth Building?
Introduction
From the single-family household vision of sprawling housing development to the influence of the financial services sector, the single-family home has long been the foundation upon which the US housing market is built as well as one of the primary means of accruing wealth. It is a cornerstone of the US socioeconomic system and an embodiment of the American Dream. Yet the ever-increasing cost of housing, trends in income growth and concentration, and rising concerns about climate change and environmental impact have eroded confidence in the single-family model as the ultimate form of householding in the 21st century. This essay will reexamine the central role played by the single-family, owner-occupied home as the foundation for housing investment and wealth building and offer an argument in favor of alternative models in the face of a growing and more diverse population.
Argument/Thesis:
Cities in the United States should transition to a more diversified approach to housing. The story of home ownership has long been the story of investing in single-family homes. However, relying more heavily on multi-family homes, co-housing, and affordable rentals could provide more sustainable, equitable, and accessible avenues to wealth. It would also help to meet current challenges of housing instability, economic inequality, and climate change, providing pathways forward for community living.
Proposed Format:
This policy memo will be pitched at policymakers and urban planners and will detail a historical background, existing housing trends, and a series of potential policy alternatives, supported by research, housing data, and an assessment of social and economic impacts.
