Winning an award
Winning an
award is an incredible experience that can set the course for your life and
your identity. I remember walking towards that stage while my heart was
pounding when they called my name. This was not the case since it resulted from
months of training and practice towards attaining the award. Although I was
honored with that award, I enjoyed that moment, having realized the importance
of hard work and the sweet fruit of hard work.
The journey
began months earlier when I decided to enter a regional science competition. It
wasn’t easy and required thinking of creative ideas, researching, and many
performances of the planned actions. While I closely monitored school work to
manage the project, I sometimes felt I could not make it through the project.
Several evenings were dedicated to testing, refining the hypothesis, and
practicing the presentation. Whenever an experiment went wrong, and I had
negative remarks from teachers or fellow students, my urge to succeed was more fuelled.
I understood this was about recognition and an opportunity to prove I could do
something great.
Finally, the
day of the awards ceremony came. Students from different schools went to the
hall eagerly to see who would triumph over the other. Thus, when the judges
announced the winners, I anxiously waited for my name to be mentioned. When it
finally got there, the applause was tremendous, but there was nothing else I
could see except pride in my parents’ eyes. Walking up to the stage and
receiving that award was pure happiness and validation.
Winning that
award changed how I saw myself. It made me believe that I can be more and
helped me understand the importance of determination. That award was no longer
just a shiny ornament that stared at me from the shelf; it became a symbol that
showed what I could do with some focus. The experience has been a revelation
for me and has motivated me to do my best in all my endeavours.
