rhetorical analysis about Turkle’s main argument in the introduction (pgs. 1-20) of Alone Together

  1. In MLA format write a 4-page rhetorical analysis about Turkle’s main argument in the introduction (pgs. 1-20) of Alone Together or you may focus on Turkle’s main argument using different sections of her text.
    1. remember, you’re NOT summarizing Turkle’s argument; instead, you’re showing how she argues to convince her specific audience (which you will define) about her thesis.
  2. To write your essay, you must do the following…
    1. explain how Turkle makes her argument through the rhetorical techniques outlined below. I must see these terms in your paper!
      1. Audience and Assumptions
      2. Ethos
      3. Pathos
      4. Logos
    2. evaluate why she’s effective and/or ineffective in constructing her argument through the use of these rhetorical elements.
    3. You may also discuss any logical fallacies that you come across in her writing, which would show why she’s ineffective.
        1. For instance, you may find that she doesn’t use pathos effectively in a specific example; therefore, you need to explain why her example of pathos is not convincing for her specific audience, and you may explain what she could do to fix her ineffectiveness
        2. Remember, if she’s committed a logical fallacy, these errors would make this claim/portion of her text ineffective. Your job then is to ask, how this is ineffective and the impact it would have on her intended audience.
    4. Write in the third person.
    5. Follow the organization handout.
    6. Compose a Works Cited page as your 5th page.

Intro:

      1.  Hook:
        1. In 1-3 sentences, write a hook that grabs the attention of your audience by discussing a relevant detail of the author’s argument or our main theme about technology’s effects on our social/emotional lives.
          1. This could be an interesting fact, a question, or a quote with elaboration afterward.
            1. If choosing a quote, it should NOT  be from Alone Together.
      2. Brief Summary:
        1. In 5-8 sentences, briefly summarize the three sub points of the author’s argument you will be discussing for your body paragraphs. Do NOT announce what your paper will discuss.
        2. You will need to develop the three sub points on your own.
      3. Thesis:
        1. In 1-3 sentences, write a thesis that identifies and discusses how the author uses the rhetorical elements to construct her main argument.
        2. Use the rhetorical terms (ethos, logos, pathos or synonyms
        3. Your thesis should discuss how effective and/or ineffective her argument is and why
          1. Example Thesis: In “Everything Bad is Good For You”, Johnson effectively uses logos, ethos, and pathos to convince his audience that pop culture is not dumbing us down but is in fact promoting different kinds of intelligences that are often overlooked. While he doesn’t effectively address counterarguments about violence and sex in pop culture to support his claim, Johnson ultimately makes a persuasive argument about the merits of 21st-century pop culture that runs counter to the majority of American opinion.

Body Paragraph 1:

      1. Topic sentence: In 1-2 sentences discuss 1 sub point that shows what the author wants to prove in her introduction. In other words, what is one main idea that she’s arguing for in support of her thesis?
        1. Your topic sentence should be broad enough to discuss the entire body paragraph.
      2. Quotation Sandwich:
        1. (Top Slice) Description and Analysis:
          1. Description: In 1-2-sentences, introduce what your example/quote will discuss regarding how the author uses a specific appeal in support of sub point 1.
            1. you may find that the author uses multiple appeals within the same piece of evidence, which you will need to mention. Alternatively, you could focus on one of these appeals per piece of evidence.
          2. Analysis: In 1-2 sentences, analyze how the authors uses ethos, logos, and/or pathos to support sub point 1
            1. Note: you do not need to discuss all of the appeals in one paragraph, but you must discuss all of them throughout your essay. Attempt to give each of them equal weight.
        2. (Middle Slice) Quote:
          1. Use evidence from the text in the form of a quote (no longer than 4 typed lines and no block quotes)
            1. Make sure to cite in MLA format.
        3. (Bottom Slice) Interpretation and Elaboration:
          1. Interpretation: In 1-3 sentences, interpret the meaning of your quote by connecting specific elements of the quote to the author’s use of the appeal and his argument.
          2. Elaboration: In 1-3 sentences, elaborate further by making another interpretation about the same quote.
      3. Tie into Audience:
        1. In 2-3 sentences, explain the actual or intended effect your chosen appeal has on the author’s specific audience.
          1. Remember to consider the audience’s values (what the author assumes they care about) and the context/purpose of the author’s argument.
          2. Here is where you show what the author is trying to persuade her audience about through the appeal.
      4. Optional Repeat: You may repeat the “quotation sandwich” and “tie into to audience” for another quote in order to discuss a different appeal (ethos, logos, or pathos), but this quote must support sub point 1.
        1. Note: your second description sentence should introduce a new claim that is related to sub point 1 rather than creating an entirely new sub point.
      5. Evaluation:
        1. In 2-3 sentences, write a statement that evaluates how effective and/or ineffective the author was at making her argument for sub point 1.
          1. Your evaluation is your opinion; however, you must evaluate the author’s argument regarding her use of the appeals to persuade her audience according to their values. You are NOT discussing how effective she was at persuading you.
          2. Your evaluation should mention specific details about the appeals and/or quotes you mentioned in the previous sentences and either why her audience would be convinced (because the author is effective) or why they wouldn’t be convinced (because the author is ineffective).
          3. You may also discuss any logical fallacies the author committed, which shows that she’s ineffective.

Body Paragraphs 2 & 3:

      1. Repeat the structure of body paragraph 1 but with 2 new sub points for body paragraphs 2 and 3.

Conclusion:

      1. Transition: In 1 sentence, include a transition sentence that connects your last body paragraph to your conclusion.
        1. In order to connect your last body paragraph to your conclusion, use a transitional word and rephrase the most important point from your last body paragraph (You get to choose).
      2. Thesis: In 1-3 sentences, rephrase (do not copy) your thesis in detailed terms.
      3. Summary: In 5-8 sentences, summarize how the author uses the appeals to support the 3 sub points you developed.
        1. Make sure your summary discusses all 3 sub points in a new way from your body paragraphs.
      4. Kicker: In 1-3 sentences, leave readers with something new to think about regarding the main ideas/themes in the book.
          1. The kicker is your opinion about something important based on the topic of the book that you think readers should know about.
          2. It’s imperative that they know this fact because it effects their lives or some larger aspect of society.
