Read the following selections from Voices of Freedom (refer to the table of contents for exact page numbers): An Act Concerning Negroes and Other Slaves, Richard Frethorne Letter of an Indentured Servant, Advertisements for Runaway Slaves and Servants, Petition of Slaves to the Massachusetts Legislature, Liberating Indentured Servants, Thomas Jefferson on Race and Slavery, St. George Tucker on Gabriel’s Rebellion, Solomon Northup The New Orleans Slave Market, George Fitzhugh The Proslavery Argument, Frederick Douglass on the Desire for Freedom Resistance to the Fugitive Slave Act, and Hannah Johnson Letter by the Mother of a Black Soldier.
Write a short essay (1000-1500 words) that describes what these primary source documents communicate to readers about indentured servitude, slavery, and eventual emancipation in the U.S. between the 1600s and 1865. The essay will be scanned for plagiarism, so do not use outside sources or AI. Use and cite the assigned readings and be sure to stay on topic and make your paper about the reading selections.
Your essay must incorporate at least two excerpts/sentences from Voices. It must also must include at least two excerpts from Give Me Liberty. Also, your essay must be based on your examination of the Voices excerpts.
You should cite the excepts from the reading by providing the book title and page number in the text of your essay. Follow this model:
Olaudah Equiano wrote that when he was captured, “two men and a woman got over our walls, and in a moment seized us both” (Voices of Freedom 66).
Your essay must also have a proper introductory and concluding paragraph and you must meet the minimum word requirement (1000 words).
