The second half of the semester has been more specifically concerned with the relationship between banks and government. Harvey (2020) argued that the “financial side” of the economy has gained power and influence over the “physical side,” and that this power has negative effects for quality of life under capitalism. Similarly, Varoufakis (2019) demonstrated that banks both rely on the state to provide infrastructure and demand that the state bail them out when/if they fail. Finally, Lewis provides a case study of Michael Burry, a stock trader who was able to take advantage of the state’s lack of control of the 2008 financial crisis.
To different degrees and for different reasons, all of these texts argue that people’s quality of life would improve if democratically run governments intervened in the banking sector on the people’s behalf. Having read and understood these arguments, you will now respond to them and “enter the conversation” by answering the following question:
Should the operation of banks be subject to the democratic wishes of the people?
This final paper is a 1200-1500 argumentative essay that has an introduction, a thesis statement, a minimum of 3 body paragraphs engaging with 3 prescribed sources through multiple citations, topic sentences, a conclusion
Your two main tasks are:
- defending your own thesis statement through your arguments in body paragraphs
- identifying and contrasting the claims/arguments in your sources to support your position
Using the allocated texts, you must analyse their argumentation and use their arguments (and/or counter-arguments) to support and strengthen your thesis statement argument. Refer to the articles in relevant and meaningful contexts, not only for the sake of citing them.
When planning your essay, you should ensure that you have a brief introduction that introduces the topic and the texts you will use as support along with including a focused thesis statement. You must also ensure that each of your body paragraphs begins with a clear topic sentence, concentrates on only one idea/argument, and ends with a concluding sentence. You must explain your reasoning and use your sources to develop and defend your thesis. You must make direct references to each of the required articles by applying the rules of in-text citation using either 3 short/partial quotations (no more than one line) and/or brief paraphrases. You must also write a concluding paragraph which accurately summarises your main arguments and concludes your argumentation.
also I made an outline, I want this essay to defend these regulations/operations on banks.
