Signature Assignment: A Portrait of a Graduate for Diverse Learners and Communities

  1. Research 21st Century Skills, Portrait of a Graduate, and cite at least 3 credible sources in your virtual space.
  2. Develop a virtual space/resource webpage. See this Example of a Virtual Space Download Example of a Virtual Space. This is not a fully completed example but can be a helpful visual of the use of Padlet.
    • Identify 6-8 21st-century competencies informed by your field-based experiences, region, district, and classroom data and how these competencies will prepare them for their college and careers. Include the following for each competency:
      • Explicitly state how each of the following stakeholders can contribute to/engage in developing the identified competencies of your students within their setting.
        • Teachers
        • Schools
        • Families/Caregivers
        • Community members/Globally
      • Describe how would you engage students with this topic in your classroom using an instructional practice through the following:
      • Introduce: Provide an example of how to begin this conversation of the identified competencies aligned with your grade level/content area with identified resources.
      • Example: Introducing competencies with a gallery walk: write each competency on a piece of poster paper. In small groups of three to four students, each group stands in front of a different competency and brain three words/thoughts that come to mind when thinking of the word. Provide 2 minutes to brainstorm and write their thoughts on the poster. After two minutes, have the groups rotate clockwise and continue the process until they return to their original competency. As a group read all of the responses and identify the top 5 key phrases and words that best represent their class. Each group will discuss as a class their selections
      • Reinforce: Describe how you will continue to support and engage your students with the 6-8 identified competencies with resources.
      • Example: Engage in competencies with Morning Meetings: One of our competencies is being a global citizen. Each week, our class meets for 5-10 minutes at the beginning of class to discuss relevant topics tied to one of our selected competencies. In being a global citizen, we may read a quote from a global leader and think-pair-share with a partner using constructivist listening
      • Assess: Develop a brief, reflective assessment to gauge student awareness and knowledge of these competencies
      • Example: Self-Assessment through Journaling and engaging. Using the global citizen example, I can ask my students to self-assess their understanding of what it means to be a global citizen with specific examples from their experience. I can also engage in international pen pals through a district and school-approved organization to communicate with similar-aged peers in other countries.
  3. Reflect: how can you apply this to your classroom setting now or in the near future?
    • This can be included in your virtual space.
  4. Submit your virtual deliverable. Be sure that the link is available to your instructor.
    • For example, if sharing a Google Blog/slides/ site, make sure that it is published with public/instructor access.
