SOC 430:CBE 2 Applying Critical Criminological Theories to the film CRASH (Final)

Assignment:● Six (6) separate 750-word papers applying critical theories to a scene/storyline/character to the film CRASH. These papers can
be submitted a separate document or together as one document with subheadings. These applications must be grounded in
COURSE CONTENT (no outside research is permitted)
● A slideshow presentation with voiceover (15-20 mins long) describing the highlights of the of the paper(s) above
Submission 1:
Step 1: Preparation Carefully re-watch the film and consider which scenes/storylines/characters you could apply each theory to.
Review the theories presented in Learning Outcomes 3,4&5. For each theory (Marxism, Left Realism, Feminism, Peacemaking, Post
Modernism, Cultural Criminology) you will use the theoretical perspective to analyze/discuss one character or storyline or scene. You
must choose a DIFFERENT character/storyline/scene for each theory. Your applications must have references/quotes to course content
(readings, lectures, videos). NO OUTSIDE RESEARCH IS PERMITTED
Step 2: Review your feedback from Learning Outcome 6 where you applied theories to ‘Howard’. With each application, you will
discuss how the theory would explain the chosen character/storyline/scene: “What would (insert theory) say about this?” Make sure
you make direct references to the theory (readings and lectures). You also need to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the
theoretical application: “How well does this explain this part of the film?” “What does it NOT explain?” Remember you are APPLYING
the theories to the film, not showing how the film illustrates the theory. Do NOT spend substantial time/space in your paper
describing the film. While you may want to use a few important quotes, the majority of your paper should be grounded in theory (I
have seen the film, I do not need you to tell me about it).
Step 3: You should use subheadings in your paper, dividing up the theories and even the st/wk’s analyses into separate sections.
