1. Michael Fultz, “Teacher Training and African American Education in the South, 1900-1940,” The Journal of Negro Education, 64 (Spring, 1995), 196-210.

In this article, Michael Fultz documents the discrimination against African American teachers in the South. He found that African American teachers earned significantly less than white teachers even when African American teachers had more qualifications (experience and training). This article will provide important background information for my paper on racial and gender discrimination in the teaching profession. It will help to inform the school board who I am writing to advise on teachers concerns over pay equity.


2. Patricia A. Carter, “Everybody’s Paid but the Teacher:” The Teaching Profession and the Women’s Movement (New York: Teachers College Press, 2002).

In this book, Patricia Carter explores female teachers’ role in the women’s movement during the first half of the twentieth century. She focus on the connections between female teachers struggle for pay equity and the larger women’s movement. This book will be useful a section of my term paper will explore cooperation and conflict between teachers and those involved in movements against sexism and racism. This paper will allow the school board to understand institutional discrimination.
