Sociology of health and medicine: The Interplay of Poverty and Obesity Rates in America

Paper Assignment Spring 2024 Course Title: Soc 104 Sociology of Health & Medicine
NO LATE PAPERS
Choose a topic/problem that is of interest to you (contributing biological and social factors of a
specific health condition/disease, inequalities in healthcare, similarities and differences in global
health care systems, mental illness, environmental health issues, etc…) Go through your textbook
to get ideas. Search websites or journals for ideas as well

1. You will be required to reference 2 scholarly RESEARCH journal articles that speaks
to the issue. You will upload these articles as pdf’s, and your works cited should include
them with a hyperlink. Do not use online web articles as your main article – these would
be supplemental works. You must use Professional Journals such as the Journal of Health
& Social Behavior or Journal of Health & Illness. Make sure you know how to find
proper research articles long before this is due. If you need clarification, please see me.

2. In the body of your paper, you need to address the following issues: (1) the prevalence of
the problem, (2) a citation of any current statistics, (3) make sure you don’t just focus on
biological factors as this is a sociology course, so you need to discuss the social
contributing factors to the illness/disease/social condition.

3. Make sure you clearly describe the problem.

4. In your paper, you must include at least 6 course terms from the textbook associated
with the topic you chose. You must clearly identify the chosen terms in your paper by
making them bold, and underlining them. Just bold and underline the terms, not the
entire definition and cite Weitz with the page number when doing so. Ex (Weitz, 127).

5. Discuss the demographic distribution of the illness/disease/condition/issue (for example,
race, sex, age, class, geography, occupation).

6. What social meanings are attached to the issue and how do these interpretations influence
how the disease or person is regarded or treated?
You can find many Journals through Hofstra’s Library Resources for Research Journals, but here
are some other sites to assist    you.

Please be sure to upload your paper as a word document, along with the 2 full pdf’s of your articles.

Be sure you meet all aspects of the rubric with data, citations, use of terms properly and if I ask for               formatted terms, please Follow the format asked. As you cite and explain terms, you should be citing Weitz with the page number. Weitz chapter slides are included bellow, be sure to use the best fitting                   vocabulary words that woule fit into this topic of research.

The papers should be a minimum of 3 pages and no more than 5. If you have already completed the paper and over 6, please try and edit to bring it down to 6 pages.

All papers are always in Times New Roman, 12 pt , Double spaced ( Not 2.5, not 1.5, always double spaced).

Be sure you have a separate works cited and proper in text citations for anything that is not your work.
