Week 2 Discussion QuestionsBE SURE TO RESPOND TO THE QUESTIONS IN PART I, PART II, AND PART III FOR THIS WEEK:
PART I:
As public health and health disparities expert, Dr. Thomas LaVeist writes, “Group identity is very important to humans. It goes to the core of who we are and where we see ourselves fitting into the world. There is nothing more human than to think in terms of in-groups. At a fundamental psychological level, we think of ourselves as belonging to this group and not belonging to that group. And we all belong to many groups” (pg. 7).
LaVeist could not be more right – we all belong to many groups; however, sometimes and often many times (either consciously or unconsciously) we think and act according to racial, ethnic, and cultural stereotypes. The RACE website and the Lived Experience activities remind us of this.
Think about a time in which you acted, reacted, behaved, and/or thought according to a racial, ethnic, and cultural stereotype.
Discuss the ways in which we can work towards reminding ourselves and others that differences exist within groups and not just across groups. How can we work against racial, ethnic, and cultural stereotypes in our lives, at CSU, at work, and/or in the health care setting? Be sure to be specific in your response.Please include some mention of what your experience was like when you were exploring the RACE website. I want to hear about what you thought.
There is no real right or wrong answer to this question. I want you to challenge yourselves, be creative, and brainstorm.
This is foundational work as we prepare to really delve into health disparities. Let’s get the discussion going…
PART II:
What did you think of the documentary/videos? Which video impacted you the most and why? What tools/key concepts can you take away from the videos and add to our class toolkit? What surprised or even shocked you about the videos? If you have seen these videos before in another one of my classes, what new tools/key concepts are you taking away from the videos after viewing them multiple times?PART III:What are some key barriers to accessing health care? Explore and discuss some potential solutions. Also, list three factors (other than access to health care) that may be contributing to health disparities. Remember to think about micro and macro level factors.
