What is the Objection and Response Paper?
The Objection and Response Paper asks us to practice the critical thinking skill of developing a reasoned evaluation of someone else’s view.
To practice this skill, you are asked to stake an argumentative thesis on an author’s argument and defend your evaluation by means of a strong philosophical objection to the argument and response to that challenge. Your aim is to justify your own evaluation of the author’s argument (this is your thesis) using the analysis in the objection and response.
The strength of the justification for your thesis will rest on the strength of the reasoning in the objection and response you develop. The Objection and Response Paper asks you to practice the skill of critical evaluation by considering whether the argument can withstand a strong challenge.
Requirements
Your one and only job in this paper is to stake and defend a thesis on the strength of Charles W. Mills’s argument in The Racial Contract (pp. 1-40).
For a full explanation of what you should do in the paper, see: Objection and Response Paper Guidelines (In the file section.)
