Using reference sources

You must not quote/cite lecture notes, seminar notes, or podcasts in your work. These teaching materials exist to give you ideas and frameworks to think about and within. University level study demands that you research your own sources and use them as you think appropriate for the essay question. It is important that the sources you selected for your annotated bibliography are relevant to the topic; your discussion of them will assist you when it comes to preparing for and writing your exam. Lectures do not address specific essay questions; they give an overview of a subject area. If you would like advice from a lecturer, please book an appointment to discuss your approach.

The more evidence you can demonstrate of reading and understanding about the subject you are answering, the more you will be rewarded. Demonstrating more focus in relation to your reading will also be rewarded. For example, if you choose to a question related to a lecture topic, you should read more specific books and journal articles and use them in your essay. You will be using more focused reference sources, and this should give you a deeper and broader understanding of the essay question.

What sources should I use?

At university you are expected to produce work of a higher academic standard than you may previously have been used to. Please select appropriate reference sources to read, these will help to inform the discussion within your assignment. You may not cite websites such as Wikipedia, Google, Ask or similar as a knowledge source for authority, as they are not properly vetted by acknowledged experts.  Media sources are also questionable as an academic source (although they might be used to illustrate the context or significance of a concept).

Generally, the use of journals can demonstrate an understanding of up-to-date developments in the subject area. If you can demonstrate that you have located, read, understood and applied evidence from journals in your assignment, you will be rewarded for it.

It is essential that you provide a list of references for your work. This should be included at the end of your assignment. You also need to provide in-text citations in your essay; these should match your reference list.
