– my project example: In 2023, the growth of AI such as ChatGPT piqued my interest in machine learning, so I decided to start a project to learn how to program an AI myself. Since Covid-19 started around the same time I started to learn how to code, I have always been interested in utilizing coding for medical purposes, so I decided that I would continue doing so with my AI project. To me, the most interesting part of AI was computer vision, and how machine learning algorithms could classify and identify objects within videos and images. Therefore, after some research, I decided that I would create an AI that could take a picture of a rash and identify if it was an erythema migran, a common early sign of Lyme Disease. I spent weeks learning the fundamentals of how machine learning and neural networks operate, building up an understanding that I would then use to program my AI. Once I felt ready, I started working on the project. Using Python, Tensorflow, and various other libraries for processing the data, I was able to successfully create a convolutional neural network that when trained on thousands of photos of rashes, could identify whether various rashes were signs of Lyme Disease was with an accuracy of 89% when tested against a dataset consisting of a 50/50 split of erythema migrans and normal rashes. I am proud of this project because not only did it increase my ability to combine the computer science and medical fields, but it made me understand more about arguably the fastest growing area of expertise in the world, artificial intelligence. An internship at John Hopkins, not only one of the leading STEM schools in the country, but also a school with one of the most well respected medical programs, will give me the opportunity to sharpen my skills in computer science and also learn how to apply it in another field that I am passionate about.
