Plante podcast summary: In this SeeHearSpeak podcast with Dr. Elena Plante, she explains in depth the process and content that involves a speech and language evaluation. In this podcast, she emphasizes the importance of assessment tools: validity, reliability, how they are designed, and how clinicians should use them to make informed decisions regarding their clients. To choose the right assessment tool for a client, the assessment must measure the subject and theoretical construct it intends to measure to have high validity. However, with formal testing, it can be challenging to get a more comprehensive view of their culture and socioeconomic status that can also play a vital role in choosing the correct intervention tailored to their needs. Dr. Plante recognizes that as clinicians, we must take into account the diverse populations and a client’s experiences as well as their communication styles. Cultural Sensitivity is also essential when interpreting formal testing results and recognizing that a client’s cultural and linguistic background may not be reflected through an assessment. For example, a bilingual client may be formally tested in one language, and test results may appear to have a language delay. However, the assessment was not in their primary language. She also highlights the difference between dynamic assessment and static assessment. Dynamic assessment may be more useful for a clinician because it reflects how a client performs when given support rather than just evaluating them in isolation. This can be useful when assessing some individuals whose strengths and weaknesses could be influenced by external factors. Ethical concerns should always be addressed, and clinicians are obligated to ensure that the tests they use are valid, reliable, and fair regardless of cultural, religious, or linguistic backgrounds. I thought Dr. Plante’s discussion on the significance of testing was very informative and should always be considered when evaluating a client. As a future clinician, taking measures to assess all parts of a client’s background is crucial for helping make accurate diagnoses and assessment plans.
