Essay Plan Instructions
INSTRUCTIONS
TO STUDENTS:
Broad
Topic: Select the same
topic you used for the annotated bibliography
Narrow
Topic: Identify the key
concepts/terms in the broad topic. Narrow down each concept/term to focus your
essay. Remember you are developing only three
points or main ideas so be very specific in narrowing the topic.
Type
of Essay: Indicate
whether your essay will be argumentative
or expository. Ensure that you also specify the type of expository you plan
to write.
Purpose:
Ensure that the purpose
matches the type of essay you plan to write. For example, if you are writing an
argumentative piece, your purpose
will not be to inform readers.
Research
Question: Rephrase
the purpose as a question. Ensure that the key concepts/terms remain the same. This
will help your essay to be focused and tightly aligned. Also, use the question
words (what, how and why) to frame your research question. Do not ask a question that will give a yes/no answer. For example, “Is AI
useful in education?”
Thesis
Statement:
Introduction:
List the strategies that
you will use for the introduction. Ensure that the strategies match the topic
and type of essay. Warning: do not write
the entire introductory paragraph. You will receive zero (0) points.
Attention
Grabber: Identify
the strategy you will use as the “hook” to pique your readers’ interest.
Topic
Sentences: Write out the full complete
topic sentence. Ensure
that your topic sentences are concise, specific and arguable. Also, your topic
sentences must be in your own scholarly voice and must align with the thesis
statement.
Supporting
Details: List
the points that you will use to support each topic sentence. Do not present paragraphs.
Rhetorical
Strategies: Select
the strategy or strategies that would best support the claim you are making in
a particular paragraph. Be mindful that you do not overuse one strategy.
Evidence:
Ensure that the evidence
used is current, peer-reviewed and relates to the main idea. Also, ensure that
you summarize the evidence and provide the citation, not the bibliography. If you fail to cite the source, your evidence
will be flagged for plagiarism. You should use a minimum of five (5) different sources. You are
also allowed to use only one short
quotation.
Conclusion:
List the strategies that
you will use for the conclusion. Warning:
do not write the entire concluding paragraph. You will receive zero (0) points.
