The title of the thesis is “Study of cavities in one-dimensional photonic crystals using the finite difference method in the time domain”.
and a summary:

Photonic crystals (PCs) are structures that exhibit optical functionality at the material level, allowing light to be completely blocked or propagated in certain directions and at certain frequencies. They achieve this through a periodic variation of the refractive index in one, two, or three dimensions. In these periodic structures, the distribution of electromagnetic modes and the accompanying dispersion relations differ dramatically from those of ordinary optical media. In particular, it turns out that photonic crystals have ‘photonic gap’ regions, i.e. regions where the propagation of photons is prohibited. Any disruption of this periodicity leads to the creation of cavities where electromagnetic energy can be trapped. We study such a cavity in the present work with the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method, where we examine the dynamic concentration of electromagnetic energy in a one-dimensional photonic structure. From our study, directly in the time domain, a series of conclusions are drawn regarding the way energy is trapped and leaked, the role of the periodicity of the structure in relation to the wavelength, the spatial distribution of the electric and magnetic fields , and a host of other features of the dynamics of periodic photonic structures.
