Module assessment

Individual portfolio (30%)

Deadline Friday 22nd March 5pm (Irish Standard Time). Submit via Brightspace (upload link to Padlet)

The purpose of the portfolio is to promote active involvement and ownership of learning, to demonstrate engagement with module components and support planning and progress for end of trimester essay

The platform that is used for this module is called Padlet. Create your free padlet account at: www.padlet.com

Padlet is very user friendly- You can view a short introductory video  here about how to get started

In your portfolio you will describe a health challenge, summarise the underlying determinants or factors that contribute to this health challenge and propose a solution.

The ‘tips’ and template below gives further guidance on how the portfolio (and essay) may be structured.

The assessment rubric for the portfolio is set out in the section below, (Table 1)

Individual Essay (70%)- Word limit: 2000 words

Deadline Friday 10th May 5pm (Irish Standard Time). Submit via Brightspace

The essay should build on the work that you have prepared for your portfolio. However, if you wish to focus on a different topic, you may do so. Be mindful of the time and effort burden involved in beginning a new topic.

The proposed template below gives further guidance on how the essay may be structured.

The grading criteria for the essay are also set out below, (Table 2)

Some ‘tips’ for preparation for the portfolio

A template for how you may organise the portfolio which you may find helpful is set out below. To approach the project in a systematic way it may be helpful to follow the following basic steps.

a. Firstly –decide on the health challenge that you are going to research. Be as specific as possible- for example, what is the topic? What is the context will you focus on? (e.g., local, national, global); is there a specific population (children, mothers, people with disabilities).

Think about what resources will you use to ‘set the scene’. – e.g., Research papers, reports, websites

b. Try to get a general understanding of the chosen health problem. Review papers and other resources.  Link/upload the resources to your padlet and summarise key points/ synthesise findings from your resources.

c. Once you have undertaken the initial research and synthesized findings in your portfolio, it is a good idea to begin to ‘map out’ a proposed solution. Include evidence to underpin your proposed solution.

Proposed Template for Portfolio and Essay

Below is a template that you may find helpful when planning your group presentation and individual essay

1. Describe the health challenge.

Define the problem/ identify need.

Set out current practice – This may be local, regional, national, or global.

Describe the impact of the health challenge.

Use data and evidence to ‘set the scene’.

2. Summarise the underlying determinants or factors that contribute to this health challenge, (e.g., sociological, cultural, economic, geographical, and/or political factors)

3. Consider a solution. See below some aspects that you may consider when proposing a solution

Clearly state aims and objectives- (what do you want to achieve?).

Who are the stakeholders?

Implementation plan- Describe the key actions. Have similar programmes been set up in different contexts? Is there evidence to support your solution?

Consider the sustainability of your proposal.

How would you measure success?
