Summarize the roles, powers & operation of the three main branches of the U.S. federal government within the Afordable Care Act

  1. Select one of the following topics:
    • The Affordable Care Act;
    • Same-sex marriage;
    • Equal pay for women;
    • Immigration.
    • NOTE: Do not pick multiple topics to address, only pick one. You will not get extra credit for selecting multiple topics and doing a superficial job analyzing it. I suggest you pick one and analyze it well.
  2. Summarize
    • Summarize the roles, powers, and operation of the three main branches of government.
    • This does not mean describe the branches, how people are elected into office, etc. Rather this involves what are the key roles and the responsibilities of each branch? What are the procedures and processes involved?
    • Remember, the executive branch is NOT just the president nor is the judicial branch just the Supreme Court. You should be able to provide sufficient and detailed information that you have learned from the class. If you are incorporating only material that is off the top of your head, then you must not have learned very much in this class!
    • One very helpful source that can help you summarize is the class textbook and the course modules
  3. Explain
    • Explain how each of the three branches of government has played a part in addressing your topic, with particular attention to our class discussion/readings on Separation of Powers as well as Checks and Balances.
    • This is also where your 3 required sources should come in. It is not enough that you simply list sources in your works cited page. You must pull information in order to provide analysis and examples to sufficiently summaries the roles, powers and operations of each branch of government.  If you do not know what an appropriate source to use us, see 6A through 6D below.
    • Remember, this is an academic college-level course that requires you to conduct academic research. If you are looking for a course where you can pull from unvalidated websites you found after googling key terms, than that is NOT this course. If you don’t know how to conduct an academic search, this is the perfect time to learn! I will be able to see how much effort you put into your sources and that will translate into your research, your analysis, and your grade!
    • Make sure that you incorporate information from the appropriate sources you pull to provide sufficient examples and analysis
    • Explain in an objective, analytical manner, what each branch has done to address your topic. Remember, this is an analysis of what each branch has done, NOT what you think about the topic or a position on the topic.
  4. Format
    • Make this a paper of the introduction, conclusion, and several-paragraph variety.
    • This should be written in proper essay format.
    • Provide substantive analysis and give examples to support your claims.
    • You should use the course readings in your analysis.
    • Remember, include a minimum of three (3) appropriate (again see 6A- 6D below) citations. These sources should be listed in a required works cited page using proper formatting procedures. Note, citing the same source three times does not count as fulfilling this requirement. You must include three (3) different sources. If you use quotations in your paper, you must provide quotations marks and in-text citations for phrases you pull verbatim. Your essay should NOT consist of mainly quotations. A general rule of them is for every 1 line of quotes, you must include 3-4 lines of analysis in your own words.
  5. *IMPORTANT*
    • This is NOT an opinion essay on any of the topics above. Instead, this essay should demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of how each branch of government has addressed your topic.
    • You should not take a stance for or against any position on the topic, rather, you should explain how each branch has addressed the topic by using academic sources.
    • How well you objectively and analytically explain how each branch has addressed your topic will account for a good portion of your grade. This means use analysis and examples from academic sources and not simply providing unsubstantiated opinions.
  6. Include a works cited page. This must be in appropriate format. You may use APA, MLA or Chicago. Whichever format you use, it must be consistent throughout your essay and throughout your works cited page as well. Remember, it is not sufficient that you simply list sources, these sources must be sources that are evidenced in the essay itself. That said, it is also important that you do not include sources that are NOT used in the essay. Make sure to properly cite your sources throughout the essay and not just list them in the works cited page.
    1. You must use only credible news sources, articles and journals. For more information on what constitutes a credible source. Sources from obscure websites, non-traditional media outlets, or opinion articles will not be counted.
    2. Watch this video for a brief overview of appropriate sources:https://youtu.be/Jt2Uazu3GCALinks to an external site.
    3. Links to an external site.An academic/scholarly source is NOT an online blog, forum, Wikipedia, Ballotpedia, or any other unsubstantiated web-source. Citations directly from Wikipedia are not allowed. You are allowed to consult with Wikipedia, but find the actual source of the information, you can most often find where the Wikipedia information is taken from by looking at the footnotes at the bottom on any Wikipedia article page. If these sources are legitimate, they can be used. Again, refer to my notes above about legitimate academic sources.
    4. If you are at all unclear about whether your source is an appropriate source, I suggest contacting the library staff early for assistance, and/or contacting me directly. Inappropriate sources will mean you have not fulfilled this component of the assignment and will mean you will receive a zero on this component.
  7. Your paper should be typed and 750 to 1,250 words in length. As always, you are required to use Chicago Style, MLA, or APA source citations for your paper.
