Biology, as applied to the study of brain functions, is an important part of understanding behavior. Learning the anatomy of the brain, the nervous system, and the endocrine system provides a person in the field of mental health with a basis for researching and treating disorders. In this week’s assessment, you look at the biological aspects of a neurological, psychological, or neurodevelopmental disorder.
Imagine you have been asked to write a research article on the biological and biochemical aspects of a specific mental disorder for publication in a psychological journal.
Select and research a mental disorder that falls into one of the following categories of disorders:
- Neurological
- Psychological
- Neurodevelopmental
Please only report on one condition and insure that it meets the criteria listed. Please note that you should select a specific disorder that is listed in the DSM, not a symptom or class of conditions. For example, please do not present on anxiety or depression. Present on Generalized Anxiety Disorder or Major Depressive Disorder (i.e., as examples).
Write a 700- to 1,050-word article analyzing the biological and biochemical aspects of the mental disorder you selected. Address the following in your article:
- Identify common symptoms associated with the disorder.
Discuss the symptoms of the condition. It would be best to use the DSM criteria to define the symptoms of the condition.
- Describe the neurophysiological underpinnings of the disorder.
Discuss the physiological factors associated with the disorder. You should list brain regions or other neurological factors that break down to cause symptoms.
- Provide 3 therapeutic interventions used to treat the disorder, and describe how each treatment helps to reduce or manage the symptoms of the disorder.
Discuss three different treatments for the condition. Note it would be best to use peer-reviewed sources to show the effectiveness of the treatments. Do not cite Mayo Clinic or other websites designed to educate the general public. It is also best to indicate why the treatment is used to impact physiology associated with the condition.
- Examine contemporary attitudes toward the 3 treatments you selected.
Discuss the overall beliefs surrounding the treatment. Is it widely accepted? Controversial?
- Based on your research, identify an evidence-based approach to treating the disorder.
Based on your research, what would be the approach you would recommend to treat the condition. Note evidence-based means you show evidence from research to support the use of the treatment strategy you are recommending.
Include a minimum of 4 peer-reviewed sources to support your article.
