BE PREPARED TO DISCUSS YOUR PLANNING PAPER INFORMALLY IN CLASS
Students will plan a social work group of their choosing, based on experience, interest, or perceived need. The areas for planning and headers for sections of the paper include the following. Write 6-8 pages, backed up by an average of one scholarly journal article citation (peer reviewed journal articles) per page, i.e., eight citations for an eight-page paper; 8 citations for a 8-page paper. APA style, Ariel or Calibri, 11 point font, one inch margins.
1. Needs Assessment: Assess the needs of an identified population through 1. literature review, 2. consultation with service providers, and 3. discussions (or planned discussions) with members of the target population.
2. Purpose: Identify the problem to be addressed and draft a succinct, one-sentence, memorable purpose statement, easily understood and repeated by group participants.
3. Composition: Consider who would be best served by the group, how potential members will be located.
4. Pre-group contacts: Discuss how you will reach out to and persuade potential members to join the group.
5. Structure: Explain how the group sessions will be organized and structured, including methods to engage group members in session participation.
6. Content: Clarify what the content of sessions will include and how you will engage diversity and difference among group participants.
7. Agency context: Evaluate whether the agency/organization already has a group work service and if so, how this group will fit with the agency’s mission and other groups offered? If the agency/organization does not already have a group work service, what might be potential resistance to adding your group? How will you manage the resistance?
8. Summarize and conclude.
