Context/ Review:
In George Orwell’s 1984, privacy is considered criminal. Privacy threatens order, so it is erased by surveillance and replaced by membership in government-organized activity. People are required to abandon the quest to develop themselves as individuals and instead put their energy into developing their social selves by participating in various kinds of organized activity which is structured for them.
Writing Prompt: How and why does social identity replace individual identity? When or why must we sacrifice parts of our personal identities in order to be a productive member of the larger social world? What lessons does the novel teach about this topic?
