Topic: Year 4 History – Australian Aboriginal History
Assessment Task 1: Critical Discussion paper:
Select a topic relevant to teaching history in the classroom. Provide an original & critical
analysis of research of the topic, justification of the focus of the topic, literature review,
integration of at least ten references, conclusion, academic writing and APA (7th ed.)
referencing style.
This task will involve an analysis and critical reflection on a current issue identified within
the unit and the means by which education and schools have responded to this issue. It
will include a critique of teaching strategies, curriculum materials and resources and their
impact on education in relation to students, parents and the community. Responses
should cover required readings and class/school observations based on an analysis of
ideas raised (not a summary of the readings). A scholarly response may take the form of a
critical essay or literature review.
Critical discussion paper in which students consider:
- the purpose and key influences of humanities teaching in primary school (especially year 4).
- conceptual knowledge and rationale of humanities curricula
- national and state curriculum documents
- relevant elements of society and ways in which these contribute to an informed humanities curriculum
- sources of professional learning and professional associations
