The assessment for this module is a 3000-word critical essay which explores specific areas of media culture related to the themes and issues covered across the syllabus (100%).
In your essay, you will present an original analysis of a media event/work of your choosing while focusing on the themes studied in class (such as representations of identity, race, class, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, participatory culture, and other themes) and their relationship to the wider media context.
Your essay should provide an original analysis of ONE of the following;
• the media representation of a specific event or movement
• a specific media work (i.e. a film, video game, television show, music video, podcast, etc.)
• a subcultural movement
• a specific aspect of the media
Your essay should be structured around the following:
• An introductory section, identifying the main subject of your analysis and providing crucial information about it, as well as a brief summary of what your argument will be (recommended length 300 words).
• The main body: this is where you will provide a detailed analysis of your chosen media object/event/subculture. Keep in mind that you must analyse this object with respect to scholarly writing on the subject, as well as the larger media context in which it resides.
• The conclusion, summarising your key arguments (recommended length 200-300 words).
In conducting your analysis, a minimum of five academic pieces of reference are required for this essay. You should engage with the essential readings from this module and are encouraged to demonstrate your own independent research by referencing scholarly sources from outside the essential reading list.
