The book “I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter” Settings & Chapter Titles Chapters 10-18.

  • Chapter Titles & Explanation (Chapters 10-18 )

    1. Create a title (this activity also helps you practice with the idea of creating spicy titles for your own work! Check out how to create effective titles (Links to an external site.) 😉).   Ultimately, your journal must include the following:
      1. chapter #
      2. spicy title
      3. 1-2 sentence explanation of the title

Identify one setting you think shapes our understanding of the [novel’s] characters, plot, and themes.  (This book is rich with settings.  Think about how the funeral home sets the stage for the novel.  Or, the Reyes’ neighborhood or apartment.  Or, Julia’s room, or Olga’s room. Or, the many restaurants Julia eats in).  But then, there are also “real” places in the novel, too.  Like the Art Institute of Chicago.

  • Once you have identified a setting you find important, find a picture of it to post to the discussion.  This way, we will have a board to “see” the novel in a new way.  What if you choose the funeral home?  Ok.  Great.  What find a picture of how you imagine this setting.  (This activity is similar to the activity when you had to find a picture to capture how you envisioned Jack, back when we were reading Love That Dog).
    1. Post a picture of a setting to to discussion, and explain:
      1. where the setting is in the book (which page?)
      2. how/why this setting is important.
