Thesis: 2
The Disparities in Government Assistance: Analyzing the Impact of SNAP, Medicare, and TANF on the Middle Class
This paper will explore how existing social safety net programs primarily designed for low-income households, often overlook the financial challenges faced by the middle class. This paper will discuss the barriers to accessing such programs, the inadequacy of benefits relative to rising living costs, and the implications of a growing wealth gap. Most contend that because means-tested benefits are intended to assist communities with limited resources, they are fair.
However, there seems to be a persistent lack of accessibility for the middle-class people, and that suggests that there are serious problems with the system. Currently, those that receive these benefits are required to meet work requirements or exemption, but there isn’t anything in place to assist those that fall just above the federal poverty line. In this essay, I will ultimately make the case for changing policies to better serve the interests of the middle class as this is a population that is currently shrinking
