Statement of the Problem
High school students in Kerala, India, are facing the problem of cyberbullying. According to National the Crime Records Bureau, there is a 36% increase in cyberbullying and cyberstalking of children and women in India (Maheshwari, 2020). Despite the role that counselors play in combatting cyberbullying in Catholic school districts in India, many students are reporting increased incidents of cyberbullying. This problem has had multifaceted effects on higher school students particularly in Catholic high schools. In fact, Kowalski & Limber (2013) reported that cyberbullying results in psychological challenges, including cyberbully, making it more detrimental. This problem posits long-term negative effects on students’ lives because it affects their mental health as well as student performance. The victims of cyberbullying, particularly students, reported having feelings of sadness, anxiety, fear, and an inability to concentrate, which affected their grades (Beran & Li, 2005). The feeling of being vulnerable to online threats can lead to stress and anxiety in children. The cause of the cyberbullying challenge could be the lack of studies on cyberbullying issues among South Indian high school students and more so on the effects of it on their mental health. Perhaps a study which investigates how high school counsellors combat this problem using a qualitative case study can remedy the situation.
