The Historical Biography of a Material Object: Exploring Late Imperial and Modern Chinese History Through Material Culture

Reasearch paper on a historical object (at least 60 years old) for the final paper, drawing from primary sources studied in the course or listed in the bibliographies of secondary sources. Students may also explore other sources in consultation with the instructor. The aim of the assignment is for students to conduct in-depth historical research and write a comprehensive biography of the object, emphasizing how it interacts with its historical context(s). The object should have a connection to China or be examined comparatively within a Chinese context, using the knowledge of Chinese history acquired during the quarter.I chose foot binding shoes in China history, craftsmanship, and cultural significance of footbinding shoes (the “golden lotus”) in China. The essay has to foccus on the shoe as a historical object rather than th prcatice it envolved. The essay has to delve into the craftsmanship of the foot binding shoe, a process that required creativity and an elaborate skillset that brought women closer together. Moreover, we will further explore how the shoe varied depending on social class and region. I have to analyse primary and secodary sources to back my analysis. Analysing how the shoe itself was made (by analysing a specif footbinding shoe) how it varried form diffrent social class (analysisng specif examples foot bidnign shoes, their material, how upper class shoes were made of-materail… vs the lower class) how the shoe shape varried in the norht of china versus the south of china (more arched for some parts..) I have to use primary and secondary sources. I will provide you wiht the class reading I have to discuss in this specific essay as well as well as other ressources I found.In essence the essay ahs to discuss the foot binding shoe as a historical object, analysing its cultural significance wihtin women -the craftsmanship behind it) as well as how the show varried in shape, size material depending on sicial class and regions. I will provide you with a temptative introduction i had made thta can be helpfull to use as a template that you can change.I will atatch the required class resoruces (readings i have to use as well as other soruces I found) You should add more to those in order to describe specif shoes when writting the essay.
