Assignment 1: Science, Technology and the Industrial Revolution (20%) Assignment 1 is worth 20% of your final mark. In Chapter 6, the textbook examines the suggestion that science played a crucial role in the Industrial Revolution. Today, technological innovation is often associated with the Industrial Revolution and we consider science to be the ‘basis for technology.’ However, the Industrial Revolution is an interesting case study for the relationship between science and technology. It is viewed as the turning point in the relationship. The textbook illustrates an example that the method for smelting iron may have actually been developed by trial and error (not scientific) or by knowing the scientific facts for a new method. This implies that science may not have had as important of a role during the beginning of the Industrial Revolution as commonly viewed. Please answer the following questions in paragraph format (paragraphs that have at least 5 sentences): How did the Industrial Revolution begin without the use of science? What are the differences between technological developments from trial and error vs. knowing scientific facts? Could a smartphone be developed by trial and error? How does the concept of knowing scientific facts contribute to the Industrial Revolution? Why is the Industrial Revolution an important time period for the relations between science and technology?
