The long noncoding RNA H19 promotes tamoxifen resistance in breast cancer via autophagy

Summary of Guidelines:

PowerPoint:

    • Slide design and format: choose conservatively (Refer to Module 1 videos which describe the slide design and format).

Organization of materials: Should follow the format provided in Module 1. Quick reminders and pointers here:

  • Introduction:
    • Since the entire class already has background information about endocrine resistance in breast cancer, you should not spend too much of your time giving this background. Plan to spend about 2-3 minutes, max.
    • Not everyone is familiar with the ‘other’ part of your paper – maybe autophagy or microRNA or hypoxia or…..(your topic). Plan to provide an introduction to this aspect of your paper. In general, a relevant figure from a review article might be a good idea.

Research question:

    • What question(s) are the authors specifically addressing in this paper? Usually, the last (or the one before) paragraph will provide you this information.

Highlights of results (Forecast):

    • Provide the highlights of the work (Tell you audience what they will be seeing in the results slides)

Results:

    • Focus on explaining the results. Your explanation and analysis of results is critical in conveying that you understand the results.
    • Do not include methods on your slides. You may say something like, “The authors used Western blot analysis to look at —— protein levels and found that ——“. It is every student’s responsibility (i.e., your audience’s responsibility) to listen to your seminar after annotating in Perusall and with a basic understanding of the paper.
    • You are not a teacher/instructor, therefore do not attempt to ‘teach’ the paper to the class. Your assigned task is to give a seminar presentation of a scientific research article.
    • If your seminar is too long (consult grading rubrics), consider meeting with me to discuss how you can make the seminar concise.
    • If your seminar is too short (consult grading rubrics), consider discussing results better. Examine if you have included all parts of the required material for your presentation.

Conclusions / Discussion:

    • Summarize the conclusions and discuss the conclusions.
    • You may also put together a graphic for this section.

Future Work:

    • What might the authors be able to do next? You will find this information in the paper.

Remember:

  • You may use as many slides as you want.
  • It is important to not have too much written information on slides. (For perspective, check my slides from the mock presentation).
  • Sufficient white space is required.
  • At the same time, presentations are not a memory test. Make bullet points, so you remember the flow of information that you want to provide your audience.
  • Ensure that your figures are not blur.
  • Ensure that you understand the results (and of course, the rest of the paper as well). Once you understand the paper, presenting it in your words will be easier.
  • Consult the grading rubrics provided to make a good grade on your presentation.
