The purpose of this assignment is for the student to explore their identity and their identity with others. The student will complete 2 papers exploring the topics of self and self with others. The student will respond to pre-set questions for each journal entry, see below.

Exploration of Self with Others: Journal/ paper (pts 100)
Please ensure that you are up-to-date on your reading prior to completing this assignment. Please ensure that you research the following vocabulary prior to completing this assignment. Vocabulary: heritage, culture, worldview, acculturation, spiritual, privilege, power, morals, values, beliefs, attitudes, interdependent vs independence, etc.
For this section you will explore your own identity and also how that impacts your interactions with others. For example, if you identify as Christian how will that impact your work with clients who identify as Atheists vs. Christian? How will your views on abortion, LGBTQ rights, divorce, etc. impact your work with clients who do not share your religious beliefs?  If you are a male, how will that impact your work with females vs males? Will you over-relate to male clients or expect more emotional expression from female clients? If you are White, how will that impact your work with clients who identify as oppressed minorities? Many students think about how they will relate to people different than themselves but it is as important to think about how your identity will impact your interactions with people who share similar identities as you. Do not just think about how you will react but how your cultural identity and expression will impact how clients interact with you. For example, will African American clients be less likely to trust me as a White counselor? How will my hetronormative language and expression impact the comfort level of my LGBTQ clients? 
 
 
You should have at least one paragraph in each section. Please utilize APA headings to organize your paper. Please use the same order as indicated below. 
 
  1. Describe/define your individual cultural heritage. 18pts
    • Describe how this heritage affects your worldview (how you view the world, coexist, and cooperate with others). (CACREP Sec.2.F.2.d.)
    • What did you inherit (race, ethnicity, nationality, language, SES, etc.)? How do these components impact how others perceive you? Do you experience oppression or privilege in these areas? How does that impact your interaction with the world? 
  2. Describe/define the morals, values, beliefs/attitudes/understandings you hold as part of your individual identity and self-concept. 18 pts
    • Describe how these affect your worldview (how you view the world, coexist, and cooperate with others). (CACREP Sec.2.F.2.d.)
    • What do you value? How do you feel about people who have different values? For example, do you value family? What if you have a client who does not want to have a connection with their family? Do you value hard work? What if you have a client who you identify as lazy and reliant on other people? 
  3. Describe your acculturative experience. 18 pts
    • Describe how this experience affects your worldview (how you view the world, coexist, and cooperate with others). (CACREP Sec.2.F.2.d.)
    • NOTE: Everyone has experienced acculturation; some in major ways (like moving to a new geographical location or marrying into a family with a differing culture) and some in minor ways (like joining a new self-help group where everyone is different from you or moving to a new town).  
  1. Discuss how your spiritual beliefs impact your worldview and your work with clients (especially when their spiritual beliefs are different from yours). 18 pts
    • Describe your understanding of how a client’s spiritual beliefs can impact their worldview. (CACREP Sec.2.F.2.g.)
    • This is not a place for PC answers about how you accept all people. Think about how you feel about people who do not act in a way that aligns with your beliefs. If you do not identify as religious, think about how you feel about conservative religious people. What if a client asks you to help them practice beliefs that do not align with your practices? How will you incorporate the client’s religious practice into sessions?
  2. Discuss both, the power and privilege you feel you hold and the impact that has had on your life. 18 pts
    • Describe your understanding of how a client’s perceived level of power and privilege can impact their worldview. (CACREP Sec.2.F.2.e.)
    • Think about your ADDRESSING and RESPECTFUL framework and how those relate to privilege and power vs oppression. How will your experiences with oppression and privilege impact how you relate to others? 
Note: Everyone holds some level of power and privilege in their world; some in major ways and some in minor ways. Those levels can only be defined by the individual.
