As you have read about self-disclosure, what has impressed you so far? What has been familiar? What has been new? In this assignment, you will watch a movie clip from You’ve Got Mail and respond to it by discussing the concepts and principles related to self-disclosure.

Film Summary: Joe Fox and Kathleen Kelly hate each other in real life. Little do they know, however, that they are each other’s online anonymous confidant. Under the guises of their secret online identities, and in a spirit of self-disclosure, they tell each other things that they would never say to each other if they knew who they were really communicating with. In this scene, Joe Fox goes out on a limb and asks Kathleen a startling question that has everything to do with self-disclosure and communication.

Even though the movie was made when online technology was much older and less sophisticated, the principles involved in online communication have remained the same regardless of the technology used.  You will see that concepts from the text are exemplified

Questions to answer in the discussion

  • Consider the different concepts and principles that the text describes related to self-disclosure.
  • Choose one of the concepts or principles, but do not identify it in your post. Rather, describe it without using any of the vocabulary employed in the text.
  • Then, give an example by sharing an experience where you saw that concept or principle in action. Here, too, do not identify the concept or use any vocabulary from the text in your example. Your peers will try to guess which concept or principle it is. You should make it fairly easy for your peers to guess the concept or principle without naming it or using the language in the text. You should not make this obscure or difficult.
    • For example, you might choose the first principle in the text, “Self-disclosure is intentional and truthful.” You would not include these words in your description or example. However, based on the explanation in the text, you would describe this principle in your own words and give an example where you have seen it or used it yourself. Then, because of your accuracy and clarity in describing and illustrating the principle with an example, your classmates would hopefully be able to think, “Ah, okay. I think I know what this principle or concept form the text is that my peer is describing and giving and example of.” Then the peer would go on to make a post indicating what their guess is and why.
