- First, select a quotation from Keats, Wordsworth, Coleridge, or Wilde. Treat this similarly to the QIs—your quotation should reveal something thematically about the text or the time.
- Craft a thesis or argument that makes a connection between the quotation and the associated problems, politics, or philosophies of its associated era (Romantic or Victorian).
- Here’s an example thesis statement: “This quotation from Wuthering Heights shows how Emily Brontë is deconstructing the tension between the upper and lower classes of Victorian England through satire and criticism of gender norms.” —– A bit wordy, but it works.
- Follow a general 3-part essay structure: introduction, body, conclusion.
- You must include at least one source to back up your ideas. You can find an academic, scholarly source through LRC resources, scholarly databases (such as EBSCOhost) or Google Scholar. You may also use secondary sources we have used in class.
- Adhere to MLA format, use appropriate academic style, and edited American English.
The purpose of this paper is to get you thinking deeper about how the historical, philosophical, and social contexts of either the Romantic or Victorian eras influenced the literature that was produced. ( Essay # 1)
