  • Introduction (1 Paragraph): 
    • Write an introduction that grabs the audience’s attention, provides background information on the topic, and narrows the scope of your argument.

    • Concrete Details: each paragraph must include concrete details from a variety of sources that illustrate the values presented in “the rhetoric of _____.”  The concrete details must clearly illustrate the main point (topic sentence) of the paragraph. Details must come from a variety of sources that might include books, magazines, newspapers, films, television shows, or speeches. 
    • Evidence: each paragraph must include at least two quotations from the sources you use to determine the valuespresented in “the rhetoric of _____.”  Provide detailed information for each quotation by introducing the author, speaker, source title, and the context of each quotation.  Cite all quotations in MLA format.

    • Concluding Sentence: the last sentence of each body paragraph must tie the paragraph back to the thesis of the paper. 
  • Body Paragraphs 4-6 (Argument): What are the implications of the values presented in “the rhetoric of _____” ?

    • Commentary/Reasoning: unpack each quotation in each paragraph; then explain how each quotation supports your main point in the paragraph.  Provide a line of reasoning for every claim you make!
    • Concluding Sentence: the last sentence of each body paragraph must tie the paragraph back to the thesis of the paper. 
  • Counterargument (1 paragraph):
    • Identify one counterargument that opposes your argument about the implications of the values expressed in “the rhetoric of _____.”Make sure to highlight the reasoning behind the oppositional argument. 
    • Provide valid reasons that explain why the counterargument is unsound or shortsighted.  
    • Provide examples and scholarshipthat show why the counterargument is unsound or irrational. 
    • Explain why your thesis is stronger than the counterargument. 
  • Conclusion (1 Paragraph): 
    • Summarizes the main ideas without repetition. 
    • Make sure the conclusion leaves the audience with a clear understanding of the main argument. 
    • Move the reader forward. 
    • Do not restate your thesis statement!
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the ideas presented in class.
