In this essay of 750-1,000 words, you will write about one of the following topics: the role of men, the role of women, or the role of the sea in Kate Chopin’s The Awakening.
- Your essay must include textual evidence from the work itself, both the first half of the novel and the second half of the novel.
- Your essay must include one, but no more than two, short references to scholarship, articles, outside research. I recommend the Gale reference database from the PSC library.
- Your introduction must contain a strong thesis.
- Example of a weak thesis: There are many important references to women in Kate Chopin’s “The Awakening.”
- Example of a strong thesis: Edna Pontellier had two choices: either be the type of woman who would serve only herself, like Mademoiselle Reisz, or the type of woman who would serve others, like Madame Ratignolle. This dilemma led to the dramatic conclusion of the novel.
- Your conclusion must address how your chosen topic impacts the dramatic conclusion.
- You must include a short Works Cited page, in MLA format.
- You must adhere to all MLA format guidelines.
