Paper & Presentation
For part of your grade, you are required to write a paper and participate in a “data slam”
presentation format during class time. Students must be present or excused for all Data Slam
presentations to receive full credit for their own
presentation. The paper will be similar to the
mini-reviews that you see in the journal Endocrinology or in Journal of Endocrinology, but with
fewer sources and lower expectations of expertise in the field. The Data Slam presentation will be
a presentation of a single data slide from one of the primary research papers you read as a
source for the paper you wrote. You should choose a figure or graph that illustrates an important
finding on your topic. You will have 2 minutes to give your presentation in class. More information
will be provided below and in class. I require that you provide titles to at least 2 primary research articles on your topic
in your initial email or visit. That helps me see your direction and see that you will be able to
meet reference requirements for the paper. Topics are open to some degree, but I do require
that you use recent (last 5 years), primary research articles in basic or translational
endocrinology research. Be sure to cover all sides of controversial issues, particularly where
there are competing research groups involved. It is not acceptable to simply review an
endocrine disease, hormone or system that is well known or covered in class. Learn new stuff
and get excited!
2. Length Requirements: Papers should be 3-5 pages of double-spaced text, 1 inch margins on
all sides and a 12 point font. Page count excludes figures, titles, title page, outline, reference
list, abstract, headings, etc. The page count covers the actual text only, so go over the
minimum to avoid problems.
3. Originality Requirements: All papers will be checked with the plagiarism software. Be careful
not to “cut/paste” or “borrow” too many phrases. Borrowing phrases or clauses (half of a
sentence) will be noticeable with the software. Writing from an outline, synthesizing
information from multiple sources, and using quotes when appropriate should take care of
plagiarism issues and improve your grade. Also do not quote much; that is not common in
scientific writing even though it is common in many other types of writing. I reserve the right
to additionally utilize software to detect AI generated papers if allowed. I doubt that
will be a problem with the requirements of negotiation, reference approval, rough drafts and
UC Writing Center visit, but I am preparing for the possibility.Reference Requirements: Papers must be based on a minimum of 4 scientific references
including at least 2 recent, primary references. Primary references are first-hand accounts of
experimental work from peer-reviewed, professional science journals. You may have
references from nonscientific reviews, journals, books or the internet if you wish, but these
will not count toward the required 4. I expect A papers to exceed these minimums
the role(s) of growth hormone and IGF on protection against neural damage during hypoxia
**Attached in the files are some guides, along with the sources, there is also a template mini review (KNDy Neurons). Must be cited in endocrine format
