The Threat to Religious Heritage: The Controversies Surrounding Notre-Dame Cathedral and the Hagia Sophia

This is the paper instructions: 6-page paper on a topic generated by the student. Thesis topic must be approved by instructor. You are encouraged to present a case study of a particular conflict and propose a possible solution by drawing on examples from the course and pulling together independent research on the selected topic. However, the paper could also address other topics or issues related to the class, including but not limited to: definitions of sacred vs secular; definitions, characteristics, or commonalities/differences among sacred places; how and why ancient sites become sacred; how and why sacred places become the object of contention. Students must reference at least 3 readings from the course and at least 3 additional academic sources that were not assigned as class readings; these external sources must be annotated.

I need an annotated bibliography as well. I uploaded some of our readings for the class down below. The paper should be in Times New Roman 12-point font. Edit, add in, or remove as you please with the outline I provided, but this is kinda of how I wanted my essay to go:
1. Introduction
1.1 Background on Notre-Dame Cathedral and the Hagia Sophia
The descriptions of the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris and the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul as religious and cultural heritage symbols are worth knowing. With its rich history, the 12th-century Gothic Architecture of Notre Dame Cathedral has always been the bedrock of French identity and Catholicism’s traditions. In like manner, Hagia Sophia is a perfect example of an intermingling of Christian and Islamic influences over time as it was initially a Christian cathedral built in the sixth century that later became a mosque before being turned into a museum in the 20th century, thus giving it a unique historical context.
1.2 Thesis Statement
Contrary to prevailing notions of secular progress, the controversies surrounding Notre-Dame Cathedral and the Hagia Sophia emphasize a dangerous erosion of respect for religious heritage, exposing a systemic bias towards secularization that threatens to erase centuries of cultural and spiritual significance.
The process of secularization has a considerable impact on the preservation and appreciation of religious landmarks, which further exacerbates the degradation of regard for religious heritage.
2. Erosion of Respect for Religious Heritage
2.1 Secularization and Its Impact on Religious Heritage
Secularization, the process by which a society becomes less influenced by religious beliefs and institutions, has far-reaching implications for conserving and respecting religious heritage. As secular values increasingly dominate societies, there is an eroding appreciation of the historical and spiritual import linked to religious landmarks.
2.2 Controversies Surrounding Notre-Dame Cathedral
2.2.1 Point 1: Lack of Preservation Efforts
The devastating fire that engulfed Notre Dame Cathedral in April 2019 revealed a glaring lack of adequate preservation efforts. Despite being a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most visited landmarks in the world, the cathedral needed to be more consistent in terms of maintenance and fire safety measures.
2.2.2 Point 2: Disregard for Historical Significance
Notre Dame’s controversy also exemplifies a wider indifference to the historical importance of this type of heritage. The church’s reconstruction campaign led to debates about whether retaining its original Gothic architecture or incorporating contemporary features would make more sense. This discrepancy points out that modern-day values are not compatible with antiquity.
2.2.3 Point 3: Threat of Cultural Loss
Notre Dame Cathedral is threatened by neglect and controversies that indicate possible cultural loss. In addition to being an aesthetically pleasing structure, Notre Dame has great cultural significance and spiritual value for many people globally; therefore, any erosion of its cultural meaning represents a diminishment in the common human past.
3. Systemic Bias Towards Secularization
3.1 Secularization as a Dominant Narrative
The modern world has adopted secularization as the main narrative, neglecting the value of its religious background. This gives a higher priority to secular values, leading to marginalization of religion and undermining of their historical roles.
3.2 Controversies Surrounding the Hagia Sophia
3.2.1 Point 1: Conversion into a Mosque
The conversion of Hagia Sophia from a museum back into a mosque in July 2020 sparked debates about preserving religious heritage and protecting the rights of religious minorities. The decision to revert this iconic monument suggested a rise in religious nationalism and ignorance of its significance as an emblem of cultural diversification and multiple religions.
3.2.2 Point 2: Suppression of Religious Diversity
The reconversion of Hagia Sophia into a mosque also raised concerns over the suppression of different faiths and the erasure of non-Muslim narratives from the building’s history. By privileging one religion over others, it maintained a discourse that excludes others while preaching intolerance.
3.2.3 Point 3: Symbolic Importance
Additionally, the Hagia Sophia conflict involves more than merely changing physical aspects; they have greater symbolic meaning. More broadly, tensions between countries are reflected in the alteration in status at the monument level, which highlights how religion is used for political ends.
4. Preserving Centuries of Cultural and Spiritual Significance
4.1 Importance of Religious Heritage
Preserving religious heritage does not just entail architectural conservation, but it also entails protecting centuries of cultural and spiritual import. These relics are reminders of the past and remind others that their civilization has a diverse history.
4.2 Promoting Dialogue and Understanding
Efforts to preserve religious heritage can serve as powerful catalysts for dialogue and understanding among diverse communities. By embracing the layered histories of places like Notre Dame Cathedral or the Hagia Sophia, societies can foster greater empathy and appreciation for cultural differences, thereby strengthening the shared community.
4.3 Balancing Preservation and Adaptation
Striking a balance between preserving religious heritage and meeting the needs of today’s world is an enormous undertaking. However, policymakers must ensure these buildings are preserved in a way that makes sense for future generations. The importance of this task cannot be overstated. These religious heritage sites are not just historical artifacts, but they are also living symbols of the shared cultural and spiritual past. In conclusion, issues surrounding Notre Dame Cathedral and the Hagia Sophia suggest an urgent need to reconsider societal attitudes toward religious heritage. When we recognize that these monuments have intrinsic value and resolve the systemic prejudices favoring secularization, we will bequeath to posterity a world alive with cultural/spiritual diversity.
