This assignment is to reflect on developing a quality relationship with your agency supervisor.
Instructions
Read Chapter 7, pp. 120-124 in the Cox & Steiner textLinks to an external site. and answer the questions below.
The approaches to reflect on include:
1. Interactional approach: views supervision as a dynamic process in which the supervisor and worker influence each other through behavior and expressed emotions. This approach promotes self-awareness of social workers and includes validation of feelings by the supervisor.
2. Cognitive-behavioral approach: promotes self-awareness by challenging assumptions that may be harmful and encouraging more positive and adaptive interpretations (“thinking about your thinking” and “minding your mind”).
3. Social-cognitive approach: seeks to strengthen self-efficacy beliefs through mentoring and ongoing professional development. Includes supervisee learning through modeling and support.
4. Experiential learning approach: includes sequentially moving through 4 phases: concrete experience, reflective observation, abstract conceptualization, and active experimentation.
5. Group supervision approach: uses group dynamics to advance knowledge and skills of social workers by promoting connections and supports between group members and constructive peer feedback.
6. Ecological orientation approach: reviews individual behavior and skills within the organizational environment and culture.
Questions to reflect on:
1. Which of the approaches do you think would be most beneficial to you as a supervisee (see Q. 3 in Reader Reflections on p. 124).
2. Why does that approach appeal to you as a social work student at your agency?
3. How do you think you could work with your agency supervisor to develop that approach to supervision to make the most of your learning experience?
