This discussion question addresses the second subsection: “How homophobia hurts everyone.

NOTE: There are two subsections in the Blumenfeld article. The first subsection is “How are LGBT people oppressed by homophobia?” The second subsection is “How homophobia hurts everyone.” This discussion question addresses the second subsection: “How homophobia hurts everyone.

Introduction to the Assignment: This discussion is based on Blumenfeld’s article, “How Homophobia Hurts Everyone.” After some introductory material, there are two main subheadings in the article (not counting the “Conclusion”). The first subheading is “How Are LGBT People Oppressed by Homophobia?” The second subheading is “How Homophobia Hurts Everyone” (which is also the title of the article). The assignment asks you to choose an item in the list under the SECOND subheading “How Homophobia Hurts Everyone.” Do NOT select an item from the list under the first subheading. Please contact me with any questions.

Assignment Instructions: Under the second major subheading in the Blumenfeld article, the  author lists ways that pervasive homophobia in our society hurts all of us, regardless of our sexual orientation. From Blumenfeld’s list, select one effect of homophobia and describe a specific example of how you have experienced or closely witnessed this effect. Be sure to link your example to the item in Blumenfeld’s list.
