  • his will be a special occasion speech in several different forms of speeches such as a toast, roast, inspirational, after dinner, commencement/graduation, eulogy, and tribute speech.
  • If you do not remember what these types of speeches are refer back to chapter 18 PowerPoint Slides
  • The time range for this speech is 2-3 minutes. As we learned in class, a toast is a speech of praise. The context of the toast for example can be your own 50th birthday or praise of someone else at a wedding or celebrated event.

EXAMPLE SPEECH

  • As you continue your college journey, I am confident you are eager to know what the future holds for you. On your imaginary 50th birthday, think back on your life and your accomplishments. Here are some ideas to get you started: What was college like? What major did you end up choosing? What career did you embark on? How did you get there? Are you married? Do you have children? Are you a grandparent? Where do you live? How have you positively influenced the people around you? What groups or organizations are you a part of? What do you look like? What is your proudest accomplishment? Based on your life experiences, what wise advice do you want to pass on to the youth?
  • I want you to take this opportunity to imagine what you want your life to be like and share that with the class. Write your 50th birthday toast from a hypothetical situation (obviously). Be creative! Do not be afraid to use your imagination. What do you envision your life to be like?

Delivery Information

  • Throughout this semester, you have all become skilled at constructing the structure of a speech and developing persuasive arguments.
  • For this speech, you will be evaluated on adherence to time, organization, and the stylistic aspects of delivery. I will grade you based on your skillful use of voice, eye contact, nonverbal gestures, posture, etc. The organization of this toast is flexible. You do not need to incorporate previews, summaries, or transitions. Your speech, however, should have a smooth flow. You should conclude your “toast, roast, inspirational, after dinner, commencement/graduation, eulogy, and tribute” on a strong note of finality similar to how you would conclude a speech.
  • In contrast to the other speeches you have delivered for this class, you are required to write out this speech word for word

Final words of encouragement

  • Turn in outline in the correct spot. Practice, practice, practice your final speech!  Give it everything you got! I believe in all of you!
  • I believe in all of you! You are better off with no note cards.
  • Be mindful of time. It is of vital importance that you do not go over your time. Going over the time-limit will result in point deduction.
  • You must be present for the entire duration of the speeches.
  • Have fun with this speech!
  •  I want to foster an atmosphere of hope and inspiration. As always, be respectful of your classmates. Refrain from any offensive and insensitive remarks.
