Topic
- Trade & Protectionism: International trade creates both winners and losers. If economists widely agree that trade liberalization generates greater economic benefits, why do governments continue to implement protectionist policies (e.g., tariffs and subsidies)?
What is a Response Paper?
A response paper explores a specific issue (as outlined in the prompts below). The writer should present multiple perspectives on the issue and may or may not express their own stance.
- Introduction: Begin by clearly stating the topic of your paper. You may start with an explanation, a relevant story, or background information before introducing the issue or question you will address.
- Body Paragraphs: Present different viewpoints on the issue. You can summarize, compare, and contrast sources. Each paragraph should focus on a single argument.
- Conclusion: Address the various perspectives you presented. Can they be synthesized? Are there clear right and wrong sides? You do not have to choose a definitive stance, but you must explain your reasoning.
Formatting Requirements
- Length: 5 to 6 pages (excluding the “Works Cited” section)
- Spacing & Font: Double-spaced, 10-12 pt. font
- Citations: Use footnotes, endnotes, or parenthetical citations for all evidence presented
Every response paper must follow standard rules of grammar, structure, and formatting. Grammar is critical—sentence fragments, misspellings, and improper punctuation will weaken your paper.
Plagiarism & AI Writing Policy
All submissions will be automatically checked for plagiarism and AI-generated content. Papers with a high level of plagiarism or AI writing will receive a zero grade. AI-generated writing is considered a form of plagiarism because it defeats the purpose of the assignment—students must actively engage in critical thinking and writing rather than relying on automated tools.
