Regional Report: 2000 Words. Note that you should
remain within 10% of the Word Limit otherwise you are liable to have marks
deducted.
Pick any country of the world and account for the main
security developments since either the end of the Cold
War OR since 9/11.
Transformations and security developments in Estonia after
the end of the Cold War.
Steps to completing your Report.
Choose any country of the world. It would be better to
choose one that you are interested in.
The assignment requires you to analyse the security
developments since the end of the Cold (or 9 /11). However, Andrew and
I intend to be quite flexible in allowing you to choose a shorter
duration of time since 1989. If you think that your Report would benefit from
looking at a particular period since the end of the Cold War – then just
briefly justify that choice in your introduction.
Remember that the Report is a short 2000 words
(excluding References and the Bibliography). Therefore, identify 4-5 key
security developments and analyse those under separate headings.
Keep in mind that “security” as a concept is broad and
contestable and therefore try not to restrict your analysis merely to
narrow military concerns. It might be an idea to include in your account some
broader issues such as human rights, the position of women in that society, the
impact on economic or human security and so on. Feel free to identify what
you think is important – keeping in mind the word length and be led by
evidence and research.
Remember – You DO NOT have to look at everything.
Structure of Report – Consider the following:
Introduction – outline objectives, the state, region,
introduce the reader to the time period and account for the security issues you
intend to identify and why.
Main Body: analyse the security developments under 4-5
separate headings. This is just a suggestion – you may wish not to use
headings. Provide evidence in the form of accurate references to all claims,
facts, figures and opinions taken from elsewhere. Do not make unsubstantiated
claims.
Conclusion: provide a summary of the findings and account
for how the state / region has coped, dealt with or otherwise actively harmed
its security. Again this will all depend on your findings.
References: Ensure that wherever you make a claim, construct
an argument, provide a fact or figure and or otherwise take ideas and quotes
from elsewhere, YOU MUST provide a reference.
BIBLIOGRAPHY. DO NOT forget to include this at the end of
the Report. Place the research items in alphabetical order, be accurate, and
provide full bibliographic details of the items used.
At least 5 sources from the attached reading list.
